║ I worked on a project with a few of my classmates to create ║▐
║ a low cost, off-the-shelf, open source security system. We ║▐
║ did this because there were some less safe areas on our ║▐
║ University's campus and we wanted to come up with a set of ║▐
║ devices that would be useful to our University's Police for ║▐
║ monitoring the area. One of the benefits of our system was ║▐
║ that it would have a small amount of intelligence, so the ║▐
║ system could monitor a few different variables, such as ║▐
║ foot traffic, noise level (scream detection), time, etc. ║▐
║ and then make a decision as to alert the University Police ║▐
║ or not. ║▐

║ My role on the team was to design the system that would ║▐
║ monitor foot traffic. Using Freescale's HCS08 ║▐
║ microcontroller, I created a series of infrared tripwire ║▐
║ that could detect if someone was passing. In an effort to ║▐
║ stop some false positive, as well as detect which direction ║▐
║ a person was moving in, three sensor and receiver pairs ║▐
║ were set up in parallel. The sensors were then placed on ║▐
║ both ends of a path (as shown in the image below) and this ║▐
║ could be used to make sure the amount of people going in ║▐
║ one side came out the other side. Of course, there was a ║▐
║ lot of room for error in this calculation when many people ║▐
║ were travelling through at once, but the cases we were most ║▐
║ concerned with would usually involve one or two people, and ║▐
║ for that, this system work most effectively. ║▐
║ ║▐
║ As a college sophomore working on this project, it offered ║▐
║ me a good look into the world of academic research since ║▐
║ this was the first open-ended project I had worked on, and ║▐
║ it later lead to a Research Assistantship with the ║▐
║ professor overseeing our progress on this project. ║▐
║ ║▐
║ I apologize for the quality of the following images. I had ║▐
║ to take them from an old PowerPoint presentation that was ║▐
║ converted into a PDF, since that's all I have left from the ║▐
║ project. ║▐
