║ People living with respiratory conditions are physically ║▐
║ and emotionally tied to their oxygen therapy devices. ║▐
║ However, these devices are clunky, offer poor feedback, and ║▐
║ limit extended mobility. As part of a project to redesign ║▐
║ the standard oxygen concentrator, I quickly prototyped what ║▐
║ more user-centered controls and feedback could feel like ║▐
║ for someone with a portable concentrator to share with ║▐
║ patients and their families, as well as our client, an IPF ║▐
║ foundation. The final design was a wirelessly controllable ║▐
║ concentrator that could connect to a phone and/or carrying ║▐
║ case for convenient control. A pulse oximeter could also be ║▐
║ paired with the system to enable control based on a ║▐
║ patient's current oxygen saturation (SO2). ║▐

║ ║▐
║ In order to provide wireless controls to the concentrator, ║▐
║ I added a Bluetooth-enabled microcontroller (Simblee) to ║▐
║ hook into the control signals for the the physical buttons ║▐
║ (physical button header shown above on the right). This ║▐
║ provided both a way to monitor physical button events and a ║▐
║ way to simulate physical button presses by changing the ║▐
║ state of the signals with the attached microcontroller. ║▐
║ ║▐
║ To take advantage of the new interface, I built an iOS app ║▐
║ to control and monitor the state of the concentrator ║▐
║ (through the wireless microcontroller) and prototyped a ║▐
║ carrying case that could also connect and communicate with ║▐
║ the concentrator. Both of these features allowed someone ║▐
║ using the oxygen concentrator to be able to control the ║▐
║ device without having to do extra work to physical ║▐
║ interface with it. They could either use the convenient ║▐
║ controls of the carrier, or pull out their phone. ║▐

║ ║▐
║ Lastly, in order to prototype a more proactive system, I ║▐
║ found an off-the-shelf Bluetooth-enabled pulse oximeter and ║▐
║ added support to the iOS app to pair with the sensor. While ║▐
║ the app was paired with the pulse oximeter and the oxygen ║▐
║ concentrator, it could monitor the oxygen saturation (SO2) ║▐
║ of the user and actively adjust oxygen flow based on that. ║▐
║ This would be helpful in scenarios where the user is moving ║▐
║ around a lot, therefore needing more oxygen, but they ║▐
║ wouldn't need to continuously stop and adjust flow rates, ║▐
║ it could happen automatically. ║▐
║ ║▐
║ Similar code to what I developed for communicating between ║▐
║ an iOS device and a Simblee microcontroller can be found in ║▐
║ this github repo. ║▐
